aftertaste

“I needed you there” he said with a smile,
“You did? Really?” she replied

“Sure did,” he said and turned away
as she reached out with her “In what way?”

In his heart he knew that he could never explain
Why and how the light of his love would remain
Long beyond the time they’d said “till I see you again”
And the tears in her eyes could not wash away
The touch of a hand and a warm embrace
The lingering love and its sweet aftertaste

“I miss you,” she whispered to a picture in a book.
No reply, but she recalled his look.

And the longing echoed back across the gap
they had created and let stand.

In her heart she knew that she could never explain
Why and how the light of her love would remain
Long beyond the time they’d said “till I see you again”
And the tears in his eyes could not wash away
The touch of a hand and a warm embrace
The lingering love and its sweet aftertaste

“Hello again,” in a wireless voice
Living now with a choice
“Perhaps the next time,” sighed in hope
But they already know.

In their hearts they know that they could never explain
Why and how the light of their love would remain
Long beyond the time they’d said “till I see you again”
And the tears in their eyes could not wash away
The touch of a hand and a warm embrace
The lingering love and its sweet aftertaste

And the tears in their eyes could not wash away
The lingering love and its sweet aftertaste
